Restoring Seagrass Meadows in the Solent

The restoration of seagrass meadows has a huge part to play in carbon capture and coastline protection.

Introduction

Dive into the underwater world of the Solent! Meaningful Planet is proud to support Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust's efforts to restore lush meadows of seagrass - nature's own superheroes. These amazing plants have been around since the dinosaurs and are vital for our marine ecosystem. They're not just pretty to look at; they're home to a diverse array of marine life, from tiny sea snails to elusive seahorses. This project, led by Dr. Tim Ferrero, aims to restore seagrass to its former glory in the Solent, creating a thriving underwater paradise.

The mission

Why are we so excited about supporting seagrass restoration? It's not just because it's the only fully marine flowering plant (though that's pretty cool). Seagrass is a climate change warrior, absorbing massive amounts of carbon. It cleans our waters, provides a nursery for fish, and stabilises our coastlines.

The project in the Solent started back in June 2021, with various sites painstakingly monitored to track the growth of seagrass beds and the times at which they start flowering. It was September of the same year when seagrass seed harvesting kicked off - with volunteers wading out into the Solent to collect seeds by hand in order to start the restoration process.

These collected seeds were then taken to the University of Portsmouth Institute of Marine Science, where they were carefully grown and used to produce masses of seeds that can be bound together to form 'seed bombs'. These handy seed bombs were then planted back in the harbour, with the goal being for fresh seagrass to sprout once these seeds began to grow.

The first trial was a success - and it's a process that's been repeated ever since, with Meaningful Planet's own volunteers joining a harvesting effort in July of 2025. It's a fantastic project and one that we're proud to be a part of!
