Restoring Peatland in Cambridgeshire's Great Fen

Transforming the Great Fen in what has been dubbed Europe’s most ambitious peatland restoration project.

Introduction

Led by the Wildlife Trusts for Beds, Cambs and Northants, the project aims to tackle climate change and boost biodiversity through the restoration of Speechly's Farm. This involves bringing together the north and south ‘halves’ of the Great Fen to create a new wetland habitat for wildlife, all while delivering the environmental benefits associated with peatland.

The Mission

Innovation and creativity is flooding through this exciting project - with scientists, academics and businesses all working together on the 50-100 year habitat restoration mission.

With such a long-term and ambitious goal for the 14-square mile area called the Great Fen, the list of benefits it's expected to deliver is remarkable.

As the project progresses, here's a look at just some of the positive ways we expect Peatland Progress to have an impact:

  • Providing support and protection for local wildlife - including otters, dragonflies and butterflies.
  • Reduced peat loss helping to prevent the release of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 every year
  • A protected natural area for the local community to enjoy - with miles of footpaths and cycleways planned as part of the project
  • Added flood protection for local villages and farmland
