Meaningful Planet is thrilled to support the BCN Wildlife Trust's Project Beaver - an exciting initiative to reintroduce these fascinating creatures to Northamptonshire after a 400-year absence

Something special is happening at the Nene Wetlands Centre in Northamptonshire, where the BCN Wildlife Trust released a family of eight beavers in February 2025.
The fascinating creatures haven't been spotted in the area for hundreds of years - and the hope is that their presence will help to create a habitat that enables other wildlife to thrive (as well as enabling locals to connect with an amazing story of nature recovery).
The project took four years of planning from the Team at the Trust before the beavers were released, with special care taken to create a fenced enclosure to help provide the right conditions for the animals to thrive.
Dubbed Nature's Engineers, beavers bring a whole lot more than their trademark front teeth - playing a huge ecological role for the surrounding environment.
The dams they build help to form ponds and canals, which in turn enable other species to settle and thrive. Water beetles, birds, bats and frogs are just a few that it's hoped will benefit from the presence of the beavers and everything they have to offer their new habitat.
